Naturalization
What is Naturalization?
Naturalization is the process through which a lawful permanent resident becomes a U.S. citizen. It is a significant milestone which brings security, opportunity, and a sense of belonging to the recipient. The N-400 process can feel straightforward at times and unexpectedly complex at others, especially when issues like long trips abroad, prior filings, or legal history come into play.
We guide you through each step to ensure your application is accurate, complete, and well-supported, so that you can move toward citizenship with confidence, clarity, and a peace of mind.
Who Qualifies for Naturalization?
To qualify for U.S. citizenship through naturalization, applicants must generally meet the following criteria:
Continuous Residence
Most applicants must have held a green card for:
5 years, or
3 years if married to and living with a U.S. citizen.
You must also demonstrate continuous residence in the United States during this period.
Physical Presence
You must have spent at least half of the required residency period physically inside the United States. Extended travel (especially trips over 6 months) may require additional explanation or supporting evidence.
Good Moral Character
USCIS reviews your conduct for the statutory period (typically 3-5 years), including:
taxes
criminal history
selective service registration (if applicable)
honesty in prior immigration filings
financial responsibilities
Having an issue with any one of the above does not automatically disqualify you, but it may require careful legal analysis.
English and Civics Requirement
With certain exceptions, applications must demonstrate:
basic English ability (reading, writing, speaking), and
knowledge of U.S. history and government through a civics test.
Willingness to Support the Constitution
Applicants must be willing to take the Oath of Allegiance and accept the duties of citizenship.
